The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of External Relations in developing and implementing strategies to build public understanding and support for the college’s mission, with a strong emphasis on institutional advancement, governmental and media relations, and academic reputation. Typical duties include applying qualitative research, segmentation, targeting, strategy, creative, design & production oversight, and dissemination skills to make hard copy and digital materials & merchandise that win attention and build quantitative understanding and support for UC Hastings; creating and updating content online and managing multiple projects for traditional and digital media; collaborating with other departments within the college for collateral support, training, message development and brand strategy integration; conducting basic market research and analysis; partnering with the Director on the development of the annual External Relations plan; serving as spokesperson and media relations backup for the Director when called upon; and performing administrative related activities.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of 3+ years of experience in public relations, corporate communications or marketing, preferably with knowledge of higher education, demonstrated media relations experience, and a proven track record of developing and pitching stories. Must have social media experience as a component of a comprehensive communications plan; experience positioning, developing value propositions and/or fundraising case statements (a specialty in higher education is preferred); experience writing and updating web content in various CMS (including WordPress); managing multiple projects for traditional and digital media; and outstanding writing, organizational, interpersonal and presentation skills. A demonstrated understanding of the principles of sound public relations, marketing and fundraising are necessary, along with strong project management, analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/resolution, interpersonal and presentation skills. Additionally, must be able to employ and effectively explain SEO techniques across digital platforms; have a strong design sensibility and the ability to ensure production of high-quality and innovative creative work within budget and time constraints; possess knowledge of DMCA, Fair Use, CAN-SPAM and industry email marketing best practices; and be familiar with copywriting, art direction and visual design principles. Knowledge of digital strategy, analytics, conversion optimization and modern marketing tactics & tools, including social media, email, SEM, SEO, personalization, effective A/B testing, CRM, and marketing automation is preferred, as are knowledge of governmental relations at the state and federal levels and photo, video and audio-story abilities.

This full-time opportunity offers an annual salary range of $59,337-$83,060 (commensurate with qualifications) plus an excellent benefits package. Learn more and apply.
